Introduction
The OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) is being used for a variety of import and export tasks in ANZREG libraries. This panel discussion will cover the basics of what OAI-PMH is, followed by a variety of specific use cases, including Trove, Figshare, Recollect, and Ex Libris systems.
What is OAI-PMH?
Deborah Fitchett (Lincoln University) opens the panel discussion with an overview of OAI-PMH, what it means and how it can be used.
Trove
David Witteveen (La Trobe University) and Peta Hopkins (Bond University) speak about their experiences in creating OAI-PMH pipes from Alma to Trove. This new process has been promoted by Libraries Australia, to replace the previous ftp holdings updates.
Harvesting
David Witteveen (La Trobe University) – Harvesting Figshare to Primo
Here David unpacks his experiences and learnings from establishing an OAI-PMH pipe from Figshare to Primo Back Office.
Mike Kmiec (Western Sydney University) – Harvesting Rosetta to Primo VE
Mike presents his experiences on surfacing the Whitlam Prime Ministerial Collection in Primo VE, using discovery import profiles (which utilise OAI-PMH pipes) to load records from Rosetta.
Publishing
Bronwyn King (UNSW) – Publishing from Alma to RapidILL and publishing Recollect to Primo
In “OAI-PMH publishing and harvesting at UNSW”, Bronwyn outlines how OAI-PMH feeds are used to publish library holdings to RapidILL, to support and streamline the interloans process. Separately, OAI-PMH publishing has also been established between Recollect (an archival management product) and Primo, to enhance the discoverability of the University’s archival collections.
Rich Robertson (NLNZ) – Publishing Alma to NLNZ search and Rosetta
Rich rounds out these presentations with an overview of New Zealand National Library’s work on publishing for discovery and preservation. Content discovery is enhanced by publishing from Alma to ‘NatLib search’, the main discovery search on the National Library website. This is done using an in-house API, Supplejack, which harvests Alma records daily and exposes them into NatLib search.
Preservation is streamlined by publishing from Alma to Rosetta, the Ex Libris archival preservation product.
